Poetry Collected after January 1, 2000 Click here for 1973-1999
From my late teen years to my mid-twenties it seemed natural to express strong emotions in verse. But somewhere in the noise of making a living and making a business I lost the knack of speaking my heart. In the fall of 2000 Steve Argyle invited me to swap a few limericks in honor of Halloween. It was the first time I'd attempted any verse in nearly 20 years. I am much more attracted to form and meter than I was as a younger man; and poetry feels more like exercise than spontaneous play. But the exercise feels good; it's wonderful to find a lost voice again. And when I began writing again I also found myself with access to a number of delightful recent works from friends that hadn't admitted to me their passion for poetry. So of course I immediately started collecting pieces as I happened upon them. I hope you'll enjoy these recent pieces. To examine a sample of the less structured work of years gone, click here. |
