Jack O' Lanterns from 2002

Scott carved this jack o' lantern for Halloween 2002.  It was an eerie sight on our front porch!

This was my 2002 jack o' lantern.  It was the first time I'd tried carving only partway through a pumpkin.  I recommend this technique for complex or delicate patterns.  It's lots easier, and the results look great.  If you're not getting enough light through when you're done carving, just use a scraper to remove more of the pumpkin meat behind the carved picture.  If you're using a real candle to light your pumpkin, you'll have to carve holes in the back for air, or leave off the lid.  That's why this lid is not sitting on tight.

I use woodcarving knives just because I have a set and they're handy.  But a good X-Acto knife to carve in the outline and a spoon to pull off the orange shell would also work.
